Bodrum - a dream!
Cool, hot, super, beautiful, quiet, hip, flashy - all these terms apply to the Bodrum region. Not categorical to the small town, but surely to its surrounding, showing all kinds of touristic facets. Here you will find glamour and razzle dazzle close to only little developed peninsulas, to hardly maintained trails, to deserted beaches.
The population figure of Bodrum varies from 25.000 to 150.000 - it depends on the season. But anyhow the back-country remained a paradise. Bays, tongues of Island, peninsulas, sandy- and shingle-beaches, harbours, night life complement one another to boomtown and tranquillity: all these term, which seem not to match, characterise this image, this cultic town and its surrounding area.
Bodrum-city is located at two half moon-shaped bays, forming a small peninsula in its centre. Visitors interested in culture are attracted not only by the famous Crusader's castle residing above but also by numerous other historical sites. Those seeking recreation better should be led to the Bodrum peninsula. Beaches, recreation, water sports of any kind and - last but not least - the sea of dazzling turquoise invites you to stay.
Bodrum bewitches. The coast-line charms you. The sea and its hinterland will take the visitor's breath away. Whitewashed picturesque houses will get you into the right mood for holiday, recreation and relaxation. They climb up the mountain side. These foothills of Taurus provide a marvellous view, giving the impression to be in a colossal theatre. Turkish Aegean - a dreamland.
Those who love this region aren't just Germans, Dutch or British but also wealthy locals from larger Turkish cities. A Bodrum summer residence became status symbol already for a long time. Harbours are packed with yachts and traditional gulets. The agreeable climate, warm, but always with a bracing breeze, will ensure a convenient stay. Hustle and bustle in narrow alleys at historic business quarters will leave the impression of tradition, the Orient, mystery. Bars and discos - the largest of the region, if not the largest all over Turkey amongst them - show a completely opposed world at night. And above it all a firmament, you only can dream of. It is still competing successfully with the cities shiny, sparkling glitter and glamour.
If you still don't know how to classify Bodrum, you should think of Milas, Ephesus, of Halikarnassos and white rainwater cisterns, of the Blue Voyage and Black Island, of King Mausolos and the 5th Wonder of the World. And then you will be sure: I should have been there.
